Why Ne-Yo Wrote “Miss Independent” About Me
How many twenty-somethings (and mind you, I’m at the lower end of the spectrum thank-you-very-much) can honestly say they like where they work? I hear it all the time from friends I graduated with: “they get lost in the shabublie” or they “feel shabubled in the cloud of employees.” Not in my line of work. I have learned so much since I joined this industry back in 2007, and I can’t wait to see how much I learn in the future.
I guess it all depends on whether or not you believe in what you do, or if you are able to see the bigger picture wherever you work. Some of my friends make computer chips. I could never make computer chips because I’d hate making computer chips. I’d hate making them because I’d never get to see what people use them for, how they interact with them- I’d never get to see the big picture. And when it comes to anything you do- whether you are a CFO or professional scarf juggler (which might be pretty badass, truthfully)- it’s hard to fall in love with your profession if you can’t see the big picture.
The big question when you’re a fourth grader (because that’s when you are deemed an upperclassman of the elementary school age) is what do you want to be when you grow up. I liked tacking big things onto my answer. I didn’t just want to be a doctor – I wanted to be an anesthesiologist (I made my mom write it down once so I’d remember how to spell it). I didn’t just want to be an astronaut – I wanted to be an aerospace engineer. The big question revisted me in college, when it often revisits people like me. Up to that point, tacking big things onto my answer was the determining factor for said answer. I then realized that it’s not worth it if it doesn’t contribute to my livelihood, and if I’m going to let the post-it I pick determine WHO I AM, then maybe I don’t really know who I am to begin with.
So I let my personality, my characteristics and my interests choose my profession. Jillian Fortin is a project manager and internet marketing consultant for an interactive media agency, specializing in online marketing, search engine optimization and social media. Now try tacking that onto your shoulder!
